And so it began
Good Day Rentals became a thing back in 2013. Kate was on a Pinterest rampage for her and Dave’s upcoming wedding and she decided that she wanted to hire vintage furniture for said wedding. While there was one or two small vintage hire businesses in Melbourne, none had everything she wanted, and it was mostly pretty rustic, when what Kate wanted was more glam textures – velvets and vinyls and what not!
An idea formed. A business idea.
The let’s start a biz moment
What you’ll read next is a re-enactment of a pivotal moment in their lives #braceyourselves.
Kate said to Dave, “Let’s buy the furniture we need for the wedding and then start a vintage hire business.”
In true Dave fashion, he replied, “But what about warehousing and logistics?”
Kate replied, flippantly waving her arms around, “We’ll work it out!”
Which we have – but golly, those parts have been the most challenging and the least fun, but what the hey, that’s #smallbizlyf for ya.
From E-Bay to eternity
So, Kate – a long time eBay lover, began buying vintage dining chairs, lounge furniture and trestle tables. In Kate’s sisters borrowed ute named Maxine (because they had a Suzuki Swift at that time), they traipsed all over Victoria picking up furniture which would become their first collection. All the while meeting hilarious, interesting, quirky sellers, who shared our love of vintage and good chats – telling us the history of the pieces – most of which we still have.
Post their December 2013 wedding at Gardens House, Royal Botanic Gardens, they set about building a website, and doing the other super sexy business set-up things like registering a business name, getting an ABN and worrying if this was a fecking terrible idea and would ruin them.
Ready for take-off
In August, 2014 they launched Good Day Rentals, while both working at their corporate jobs – Kate as a corporate communications manager and Dave, a business analyst. The furniture lived in their front bedroom, stacked to the ceiling. That room still has the scratches to prove it because they didn’t even have a garden shed.
They’ve both since exited their corporate flunky lives – Kate in 2015 when she had Remy, went on maternity leave and never went back. And Dave in April 2018.
Livin’ the dream of… um, warehouse ownership
They now own a warehouse in Sunshine West, which along with their furniture collection – which is about 15 times as big as it was back in ’13 – houses two workshops – one for maintenance and custom builds, and the other for our rad pal slash floral genius Good Grace and Humour, plus our neon office, which is also a co-working space, POW POW!
We’ve met so many terrific people – customers, sellers, other wedding vendors and industry professionals – and it’s a truly amazing thing to us that people love what we are doing and want a part of it. So thanks legends, and GOOD DAY!
Meet the team
Co-founder and creative director of Melbourne vintage furniture hire and event styling legends, Good Day Rentals, Kate Forsyth is an expert at stacking unstackable vintage chairs, driving her truck – God – with only a few minor infractions with roadside trees and traffic islands, and designing and styling the raddest, most non-traditional and fun weddings known to wo/man. Kate is also a person.
Outside of running a small business, she parents a small human Remy alongside husbo Dave, and is learning to drum. She can now drum the whole of En Vogue’s Don’t Let Go and most of In the Air Tonight by Phil Collins, which is of course, pretty much the greatest thing that’s ever happened to her.
General ManagerCo-founder and general manager at Good Day Rentals, Dave Bunting is even more of an expert at stacking chairs than creative director Kate Forsyth. Dave takes care of most of the behind-the-scenes stuff, like making sure orders get delivered intact and on time, repairing furniture following admission to the Good Day Rentals Chair Hospital, and turning Kate’s super-rad ideas for furniture or props into actual things.
Dave is also the brains behind Very Good Products, making custom furniture from reclaimed wood.
Our Studio Assistant and creative all-rounder, Stevie spends much of her time creating animations, renders, floor plans and sketching up ideas – all the fun stuff! Outside of work, she has an extremely full creative life, taking commissions for illustrations and other cute stuff, cooking, and being a skilled Instagram story-er. She’s currently in the throws of planning her 2019 wedding.
Stevie is still an intermediate chair-stacker, but hopes to one day become an expert in the art, with a little help from her chair stacking mentors Kate and Dave.
Head of Toy PlayingRemy is Kate and Dave’s sweet little boy slash Chicken Pants. He loves all forms of transportation but is particularly partial to trucks, buses, motorbikes, diggers, graders, steamrollers and ‘noisy cars’.
Being trained to be the world’s youngest warehouse and logistics manager, Remy can already carry a box of cushions and is really rather good at ramming one fragile, vintage tea trolley into another fragile vintage tea trolley #SaveTheTrolleySaveTheWorld
